PROTECTING ECUADORIANS AGAINST POLLUTION

Picture
The UNA SALUD / ONE HEALTH Genomics and Epigenetics Program of FUCOBI works towards the goal that one day all the residents of Ecuador can live, work, learn and play in toxic-free environments. By reducing exposure, we are working to see reductions in asthma, learning disabilities, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and other health problems caused by pollution, especially among children.

POLLUTION IN PEOPLE

Pollution in People - A Study of Toxic Chemicals in Oregon
Here you will find information on the first report of 19 toxic contaminants found in citizens of Oregon, including phthalates (phthalates), mercury, perfluorinated chemicals (perfluorinated chemicals, or PFCs, such as PFOS, PFOA), pesticides (organophosphate pesticides / pesticides ), bisphenol A (BOA), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in ten Oregonians. You will also find fruits and vegetables with the least pesticide residues.

THE CASE OF ECUADOR

This type of information does not exist in the population, fruits and vegetables of Ecuador. The FUCOBI Foundation, through the “UNA SALUD / ONE HEALTH Genomics & Epigenetics” Program (2010-2020) has started a pilot program to document levels of endocrine disrupting chemicals (Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, or EDCs) in certain coastal populations of Ecuador. Based on preliminary information on the results of 30 metals in the hair of mothers of children with congenital malformations (Alejandro et al. 2012), it is recommended that the Ministry of Health, SENESCYT and MAE develop databases with contaminant levels throughout the region. population of Ecuador, as well as information on the prevalence of diseases by province that could be affected by these pollutants, such as asthma, allergies, reproductive development, brain development, cancer, liver damage, damage to the nervous system, alterations in the systems immunological, hormonal, and reproductive, etc.
