Almost 100 Foldscopes were distributed to schools and a workshop of young environmentalists located in the Chone River estuary, Manabí!. "All human knowledge proceeds out of experience; we cannot know anything except by experience." (Swami Vivekananda). Foldscopes provide an opportunity for children to experience the microcosm up close. Students were fascinated by this new tool for their science and biology class.
We had the opportunity to share a bit of our UNA SALUD/ONE HEALTH program with the students and teachers, and we were impressed with how easily and quickly they grasped the holistic concept. Not to mention, their excellent participation in the assembly and collection of samples!

The students and teachers learned about Foldscopes and the range of possibilities for active learning they represent. The samples can range from soil microbes, bacteria, cells, single-celled organisms, insects, microplastics, contaminants in water and soils, organic tissues and more.
Every participant was provided a Foldscope Kit and was guided in its assembly and use. Two students and two sciences/biology and chemistry teachers from each of the 7 schools attended the training.
Our goal as FUCOBI is to continue facilitating access to knowledge and science in coastal and amazonian communities of Ecuador, and to equip students to be adaptable in an ever-changing society.
And a special shout-out to the Rotary Club of Chone and Dra. Acacia Warren for all their support!
