The objective of the meeting was to initiate a dialogue between mangrove ecologists, crustacean biologists and population geneticists, the shrimp aquaculture industry, non-governmental organizations, government researchers, and public health professionals on the need to incorporate environmental epigenomic tools into Long-term assessments of health risks to the environment (mangroves, wetlands), animals (shrimp) and people caused by endocrine disrupting chemicals (or EDCs = endocrine disrupting chemicals) such as metals, PCBs, PAHs, antimicrobials and biocides such as Glyphosate and other pesticides, insecticidal toxins [PirA and PirB (PirAB)] and microbial transgenes (Bacillus thuringiensis, Agrobacterium sp) present in genetically modified (GM) crops and in the food chain.
Speakers discussed the holistic concept of ONE HEALTH / ONE HEALTH to help conserve the biodiversity of healthy mangrove ecosystems in the face of climate change, to keep animals healthy, and to protect children's long-term health.
